Larsen Bay

Thank you for your interest in working for Icicle Seafoods' Larsen Bay plant (formerly known as Kodiak Salmon Packers). We are a salmon canning and fresh frozen operation located in scenic Larsen Bay, Alaska on the west side of Kodiak Island. We are a full service wild salmon processing plant producing the highest quality canned and frozen salmon available on the market. We have recently completed our 21st season in Alaska.

The salmon season generally runs from June until the end of August. However, there is a need for fall processing as late as the 20th of September. Following is some additional information you may need:

The Hiring Process

You may submit an application to our company at any time. In order to work for Icicle, you must be at least 18 years old, be able to speak and understand English, and be able to show proper documentation (Requires Adobe Reader) to prove that you are legally eligible to work in the United States. This applies to everyone; Icicle Seafoods does not sponsor applicants for work authorization.

After the interview, we check work references and criminal convictions through the court system. These checks can take time, anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Positions will be filled by the best-qualified applicants, regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, pregnancy, parenthood, or any disability that will not interfere with the ability to perform the job.

Nature of Work

Seafood processors perform a variety of tasks that can include anything from sorting, gutting and cleaning, grading, packing salmon roe, stacking boxes, to cleanup. The majority of the work is repetitive and tedious. Working conditions vary with the assigned tasks, but are generally wet, cold, and noisy.

Hours of Work

Hours and days of work are entirely dependent upon the actual size of the salmon run, which is virtually impossible to predict. While no assurances are made or implied, in a typical season you may work seven days per week from two to sixteen or more hours per day, depending on volume. You must be ready, willing, and able to work all hours assigned. There are no days off if the salmon run dictates a full workload. Conversely, when there are no fish, there is no work

Wages

The beginning pay rate is $7.75 per hour. All hours worked in excess of eight (8) per day or forty (40) straight time hours in a week are paid at one and one half the straight time rate ($11.63). Payroll will be done every 2 weeks.

Beachfront Living!

We will provide you with room and board. As long as you start and work through the duration of the season, and are not terminated for cause or otherwise cease your employment with Kodiak Salmon Packers, there will be no charge for room and board. If you quit, we reserve the right to charge you for your room and board at $15.00 per day. Rooms are shared with two to 3 people. We do not have co-ed facilities nor do we have special housing for married couples. Absolutely no cooking is allowed in the rooms. Bedding is laundered once a week. Your personal laundry is also done for you, once a week, free of charge.

Dining

Our mess hall provides food service virtually around the clock to satisfy your hunger needs, free of charge. Our fine staff serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and sometimes a midnight meal in our quaint mess hall with a commanding view of Uyak Bay and the snow covered mountains of Kodiak Island. Mug-up will keep you full of caffeine and fresh baked goodies. Our staff strives to prepare meals that are enjoyed by all. An eclectic menu of meats and vegetables to rice and noodles, as well as fresh fruits and baked goods will keep you energized for the hard work!

Transportation

We will provide round trip airfare from Anchorage, AK to our facility in Larsen Bay. This ticket will be an advance from your final pay and will be reimbursed upon successful completion of the season. Please note that if you are terminated due to excessive absenteeism, drug/alcohol possession or use, harassment, insubordination, vandalism or destruction of company property, theft, or violation of any Company policy regarding conduct or safety, you will forfeit the entire amount of the cost of your airfare and will result in a charge on your final pay check.

What to Bring

Clothing should be appropriate for a wet, cold climate. Temperatures generally stay between 50 and 65 degrees, and we get a substantial amount of rain. We supply blankets and linens for use in the bunkhouse. We also supply towels, but bringing your own towel is a nice comfort. We would suggest that you bring enough of your own toiletries, personal hygiene items, and any prescription medicines for three months. You should also bring a wind-up or battery operated alarm clock. Kodiak Salmon Packers will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.

The Larsen Bay Mercantile has a limited, yet wide ranging, assortment of sundries should you need to make small purchases. You may find soda, candy, snack food, soft serve ice cream, and an assortment of clothing, rain gear, tobacco products, and even movie rentals to enjoy in your off time.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

Icicle Seafoods, Inc. is a drug and alcohol free company with a zero-tolerance policy. The use and/or possession of drugs and alcohol are forbidden on company property and while under contract. We require employees to consent to random, post-accident, and for cause tests. If you want to work for us, you must be willing to live and work in a drug and alcohol free environment. Violation of our drug and alcohol policy will result in immediate termination.
